Gakpo enjoys playing as playmaker for Liverpool

Cody Gakpo is enjoying his switch of position at Liverpool, as he plays as a playmaking midfielder and is having “way more fun” while contributing to the team’s victories.

Since completing a high-value transfer to Anfield during the winter transfer window, people have been questioning the best role for the Netherlands international.

The 24-year-old was an outstanding player for his previous club PSV as a forward, playing on the flanks or as a central striker, and has already played on the wings and as a central striker since arriving in England.

However, in the last game against Brentford, Jurgen Klopp positioned him a bit deeper, which allowed him to include Mohamed Salah, Diogo Jota, and Darwin Nunez in the starting lineup. Gakpo relished playing a part in the Reds’ build-up play and enjoyed playing in his new role.

He said: “I enjoy playing for sure and I’m looking where I can help the team the most. Sometimes that’s a little bit deeper in the midfield and sometimes it’s in the striker’s position. I just enjoy playing with my team-mates, and especially when you win it is way more fun!”

Although he had a slow start to his tenure in the Premier League, Gakpo has now scored six goals and provided two assists, playing an fundamental role in the Reds’ six consecutive victories in the English top flight.

He added: “It’s a great feeling [to win six games in a row] but the season isn’t over yet. I think we just have to stay focused, keep working hard and try to win the last three as well. I’m really happy with the win and looking forward to the next game already.”
